Mother of What?!!

Mother of Pearl aka Nacre is a composite of minerals that is secreted by mollusks or shellfishes such as abalones, mussels and oysters. This composite of minerals are deposited inside the mollusks' shell - serving to coat and protect the creatures' bodies from parasites and foreign objects.

Some past cultures regard the colorful nature of mother of pearl to be attractive and use them to create jeweleries.

In today modern times, we use mother of pearl to create jeweleries like earrings, pendant and cufflinks.

Mother of pearl from different mollusks have different colors.

For example, mother of pearl from abalone have a greenish color to it as shown here:



Whereas, mother of pearl from oysters will give a whitish flavor to the cufflinks:
